James Updegraph, aka "Darkride," is a self-taught artist best known for his silicone Freddy Krueger masks made from his own sculptures. For several years, he has served the horror and haunt market as a special effects artist. His customers can be counted across the globe and his art reaches thousands of viewers on social media platforms like Instagram. In addition to his work in the field of visual arts, Darkride is also a singer-songwriter and guitarist. He has recorded several albums with his band and designed the cover art for his albums.
While sculpture is Darkride's strongest medium, he recently began painting on canvas, wood, and paper to further his artistic development. By taking images and thoughts from his childhood, Darkride has begun to explore the unusual and surreal side of art. A child of the 80s and 90s, cartoons, comics, trading cards, and toys have always been a huge source of inspiration in his art. Growing up in a family of modest means, most of his toys and collectibles were hand-me-downs or cheap finds from garage sales and flea markets, where vintage items from the 60s and 70s were readily available and intrigued his young mind. Just like the artists associated with the lowbrow and underground art movements, Darkride has never been one to follow convention, so he has taken the images and ideas of his formative years and reworked them into his very own creations. Darkride's compositions give a nod to times gone by, but boldly move into the future with their strong brushwork and vivid colors.
